Chemists Visit STEM Day

Chemistry learners at Solihull Sixth Form College travelled to the University of Liverpool recently to participate in a STEM Day.

Year 12 students on the A level Chemistry course got a taste of university life and explored a range of practical activities during their time on campus. The workshops they attended included surviving a zombie apocalypse, solving crimes using sand and soil and analysing catalysis using light spectroscopy.

Assistant Curriculum Leader Laura Whitby commented:

“Our Chemistry learners were a credit to the College on this visit. They thoroughly engaged in all the activities, enjoyed their time on campus and learnt a lot. We are grateful to staff at the University of Liverpool for making us so welcome.”

The A level Chemistry course explores topics in Physical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry and Organic Chemistry. Year 12 students are coming to the end of their first year of study, having explored many fascinating areas of study, including atomic structure, kinetics, chemical equilibria, alkaline earth metals, halogens, alkanes and alcohols. Next year they will move on to learn about thermodynamics, transition metals, NMR spectroscopy and chromatography.
