Visual Arts Field Trips — Solihull Sixth Form College

Visual Arts Field Trips

Visual Arts learners at Solihull Sixth Form College participated in enriching learning experiences out of the classroom in December, as they went to London, Walsall and Wolverhampton for a series of visits a series of museums and art galleries.

In London, first year Art & Design learners (on both A level and BTEC courses) visited the Victoria & Albert Museum to see the incredible permanent collections, including the Photography Centre and the Design 1900-Now Collection. In addition, among the temporary exhibitions was one showing anti-imperialist and revolutionary movement posters and another celebrating Women Printmakers from 1700-1930. Also in London, learners went to the Natural History Museum to view the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Exhibition. The learners explored the exhibitions independently and completed work set by their teachers. This work will inform and inspire their developing practices and contribute to their coursework.

The second fieldtrip gave Year 12 Fine Art learners and Year 12 and Year 13 Graphics learners the opportunity to visit the New Art Gallery Walsall for a short, guided tour of the gallery, followed by teacher-led activities. Learners then moved onto Wolverhampton Art Gallery for a tour by a professional artist, followed by an hour-long print-making workshop in response to the Pop Art exhibition.

Creative Arts Curriculum Leader Zoe Maksymiw commented:

“I’m so pleased our learners have had the opportunity to visit four outstanding museums and galleries this term. It was inspiring for them to see the work of professional artists and develop new skills in print-making. I’m looking forward to seeing how they demonstrate these new skills in their portfolios going forward.”
