Visual Arts Trip to London — Solihull Sixth Form College

Visual Arts Trip to London

Visual Arts students at Solihull Sixth Form College visited London last week to take in museums, galleries and architectural places of interest.

Year 13 learners studying the Fine Art, Graphics & 3D Design and Photography pathways of our A level Art & Design course, took the train to London with students on the BTEC Art & Design Practice course. The two-day residential trip to the capital was organised to support their learning. Day one saw them visit the Tate Britain and Tate Modern galleries to see the priceless artwork on display. They saw works by Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, LS Lowry, David Hockney and more.

Day two of the trip saw the students visit London’s Roman Amphitheatre at the Guild Hall, as well as going up to the top of The Garden at 120 Fenchurch Street to take in the views of London and the architecture close by. This included the modern architecture of the Shard, the Gherkin and the Sky Garden, juxtaposed against the medieval architecture of the Tower of London (built in the 1070s) and the more recently built Tower Bridge (built in 1886).

Students had a tour of the Barbican to see the Brutalist architecture there before the trip concluded with a visit to St Bartholomew the Great Church to see the statue of St Bartholomew by Damien Hirst.

Pam Basra, Assistant Curriculum Leader for Creative Arts, commented:

“This residential trip in London was a fantastic opportunity for students to get out of the studios and see examples of great works of art and inspiring architecture to influence their own work. Whether it was the gardens at 120 Fenchurch Street for those who are producing flora-inspired work or the architecture at the Barbican, there was something for all our young people to enjoy.”
